Mesaritis: We are concerned about the absence of E / k specialists for Famagusta

We are concerned about the absence of Greek Cypriots from a group of experts who will enter the enclosed city of Famagusta for scientific recording of assets, as recorded in the "decision" of the "cabinet" in the occupied territories, said the President of the Council for Reconstruction, Reconstruction and Relocation He added that he did not know whether Turkish Cypriot experts would be able to join the group.

Mr Mesaritis said he interpreted the "decision" taken in the occupied territories as a move in line with Turkey's activities in the eastern Mediterranean, to "block the road to negotiations" for the Cyprus issue.

I don't know if this move will mean colonization, which will be tragic, he said. "I do not know who the experts in the decision will be. The absence of Greek Cypriot experts worries us, not to mention that it upsets us and I do not know if our Turkish Cypriot colleagues will be allowed to be selected as experts ", he added.

"We are now oriented towards some contact with the United Nations, which is likely to be able to do something," but mobilization is needed from around the world, he said.

Mr. Mesaritis stated that "we have a complete approach to Famagusta, in all aspects. We have recorded this approach in 2018 in a special edition, which is trilingual, in Greek, Turkish and English, so that it can be communicated to our Turkish Cypriot colleagues. "

Asked if this report has been given to the government and the political leadership in general, Mr. Mesaritis said that "we have started sending it". Asked if the report had been notified to the T / C side, he said he had already presented it after an invitation and copies had been handed over to their Turkish Cypriot colleagues.

He added that "we have shown that Famagusta is the most expensive laboratory in the world right now to study the behavior of materials in buildings that have been left unattended for 45 years, even exposed to marine behavior."

As a global scientific heritage, what these materials have recorded in their memory must be recorded before any restoration can be performed, he said.

He noted that the Council is in contact with the Union of Chambers of Turkish Cypriot Architects and Engineers in the occupied territories and they have discussed this issue.

"I have been invited several times and I have made a presentation on the work of the Famagusta Council, and the Union is particularly interested in Famagusta," he added.

He also said that the issue was raised by the Union with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci about a year ago. "Mr. Akinci, because of his position as an architect, said that this issue is important, and in fact he replied that there is a need to create a space where samples of these materials can be exhibited, so that interested scientists can find him. they visit and get information ", he noted.
Emphasizing the importance of studying the behavior of materials in the city, Mr. Mesaritis said that "it is as if a research team had created a settlement that had been abandoned for 45 years so that it could draw some conclusions, with all cost that entails. "

So, "Famagusta, in its bad fate, has this terrible advantage and I don't know how it will be respected," he added, noting that "we had tried to pass this issue on to the UN."

Asked if the issue of the enclosed area of Famagusta will be raised again in the Association of Chambers of Architects and Engineers, Mr. Mesaritis replied: "Definitely".

He noted that given the fact that he has been President of the Association of Architects and President of ETEK for years, he has established close relations and his Turkish colleagues acknowledge his genuine willingness to cooperate.

But it all depends on what the margins are. "What worries me is that Mr Akinci seems to be outside this decision, which was taken by the pseudo-government," he said.
He noted that the issue of materials in the city is secondary to whether the city will be colonized. Whether the city will open and give the people of Famagusta the right to return under any regime is another matter. Preparing to prepare the city for settlement is tragic, he concluded.
