Famagusta Enclosed: Discussion on legal targeted measures at COREPER

COREPER is referred to the discussion regarding possible measures and in particular for the establishment of a special regime of legal measures against natural and legal persons involved in the unilateral actions of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot side in the enclosed city of Varosia, according to information from KYPE.

According to diplomatic sources, this statement was made by High Representative Josep Borrell during the summary of the debate at the Council on Foreign Affairs (JCC) in Brussels.

According to the same sources, Mr. Borel also acknowledged the catalytic importance that the adoption of confidence-building measures in relation to the enclosed area of ​​Famagusta will have in the perspective of resolving the Cyprus issue.

According to the information, the discussion continues with an emphasis on seeking legal measures, but also with a call for progress in the effort to resume negotiations.

In his speech, according to diplomatic sources, Mr. Borrell said that it was necessary to take decisions today as the issue of Turkey's illegal actions in Famagusta has been discussed for a long time, and as the Foreign Ministers now have before them an option document with legal and political measures.

In his own speech, Mr. Christodoulidis noted that if no decisions were taken on Monday, this would endanger the credibility of the European Union.

He stressed that a dual approach should be adopted, with the adoption of concrete measures, which, however, will not need to be implemented if Turkey shows readiness to accept the "bold and mutually beneficial" as characterized by the same source, President Anastasiadis's proposal for MOE in relation to the enclosed area of ​​Famagusta.

According to what Christodoulidis said inside the room, this approach will show the determination of the EU and will create motivation for Turkey, while acting as a catalyst in relation to the efforts for a solution of the Cyprus problem.

According to the diplomatic source, specific decisions were supported by Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Estonia, Ireland, Malta and Luxembourg, while Austria, France, Greece, Ireland and Luxembourg noted that otherwise they would not be sent incorrectly. Turkey.
