The Cultural Center of the Municipality of Famagusta in Deryneia was visited on Wednesday (October 19, 2022) by the Minister of Culture of Greece Mrs. Lina Mendoni. Mrs. Mendoni was welcomed at the Cultural Center by a delegation of the Municipality of Famagusta headed by Mayor Dr. Simos Ioannou, consisting of Deputy Mayor Chrysanthos Zannetos, municipal councilors Dino Toumazi, Poly Evagelidis and municipal secretary Marilena Manolis. Mrs. Mendoni was accompanied by a small delegation from Greece as well as the Deputy Minister of Culture Giannis Toumazis and the Mayor of Agia Napa Christos Zanettou.
Addressing Mrs. Mendoni, the Mayor of Famagusta looked back on the city's rich history, reaching up to the latest developments with Turkey's challenges in relation to Famagusta. In particular, he referred to the actions of the occupying power in the last two years with the aim of opening the closed city. He particularly focused on the latest announcement by the occupying power regarding the opening of the Agios Memnon district.
For her part, Mrs. Mendoni said that on the issues of Cyprus and Famagusta "we walk on a common line". He also characterized as "excellent" the effort of the Municipality to keep alive the memory of the people of Famagusta, especially the new generation. He showed particular interest in the cultural heritage issues of the occupied city.
The delegation was guided by the Municipality to the Cultural Center from whose observatory they saw the occupied city. Finally, Mrs. Mendoni signed the Municipality's guest book, congratulating once again on the Municipality's work.
