Ayia Napa: Hasiko Answers for Low and Zone Upgrade

Former Interior Minister Socrates Hasikos is defending his actions, both on the issue of Malaysian Taek Jho Low, who acquired Cypriot citizenship, and on the issue of changing the zones in Ayia Napa, according to today's report in the newspaper "Phileleftros" .

On the issue of illegalities in the area "Ammos tou Kampouris", in the area where the Malaysian acquired a luxury villa, Socrates Hasikos in a statement to "Phileleftheros" said that the Ministry of Interior brought to the attention of the competent Urban Planning Authority Housing) information on illegal excavations on the beach. He added that the Urban Planning Authority issued an immediate enforcement notice, dated July 8, 2015, which, based on the urban planning legislation, orders the cessation of illegal works.

He stressed that the issue was handled by the Famagusta District Administration and the Municipality of Ayia Napa. According to Mr. Hasikos, not only did it not help this development-illegality, on the contrary it proceeded with enforcement. He added that the area where the villa was built had nothing to do with the upgrade of the rate that only applies to hotels and even with an expiration date. He also added that the upgrade concerns the entire region and not only the property of the Church, while he pointed out that something similar happened in the whole of Cyprus. All this, he said, was done as part of the effort to restart the economy.

The former Minister of Interior, referring to the provision regarding the construction of hotels, pointed out that it was modified in the context of examining the objections against the Ayia Napa Political Statement in the period 2016-2017, where, after submitting suggestions by any interested party, as provided by its participatory procedures According to urban planning legislation, there were suggestions to allow the construction of hotel units in the east of Ayia Napa, in a tourist area where hotels were not allowed before, in order to avoid the anarchic development of the 70s and 80s.

He added that taking into account the positive recommendations of the Objections Study Committee (Municipality, District and Urban Planning), and with the main goal of restarting the economy in the midst of the crisis, the ministry approved the temporary acceptance of applications for construction of high standard hotels (4 stars and ), under conditions.
