AYA NAPA: Tried to rape 25-year-old woman - 17-year-old asylum seeker handcuffed

Two women were attacked by a 17-year-old asylum seeker from Somalia who is staying in a hotel in Ayia Napa. The defendant sexually assaulted a 25-year-old woman while also harassing a 23-year-old woman.

Stiv Theodoulou, press representative of the Famagusta Police Department said that "on March 22, a 23-year-old Greek Cypriot woman reported to the Agia Napa Police Station that on the same day and around 3:30 in the morning, an unknown person attacked her obscenely in Agia Napa. The complainant stated that the unknown person followed her while she was walking in Ayia Napa to the point where he attacked her and that when she called a relative, the man fled in an unknown direction."

The 23-year-old also mentioned that she "managed to record the perpetrator with her mobile phone camera".

Moreover, "around 4:30 in the morning on Saturday, March 25, a complaint was made to the Ayia Napa Police Station by a 25-year-old woman from Lithuania, a resident of Ayia Napa, that an hour and a half earlier, while she was returning home from a night out, an unknown man was following her and he was talking to her, as a result of which he became burdensome.

Upon her arrival at her house and while she was trying to close the door, the stranger pushed the door and entered the house, causing the 25-year-old to start shouting and asking him to leave, while he grabbed her by the neck and held her legs".

As Mr. Theodoulou said, "according to the complaint, the 25-year-old reacted by pushing the stranger back and started shouting, causing him to leave and the girl to manage to close the door of her apartment."

In another case, "on Sunday, March 26, members of the Ayia Napa Police Station located a 17-year-old asylum seeker from Somalia in a hotel in the area, who completely resembled the description of the perpetrator. A search followed in the apartment where he lived and items of clothing and footwear similar to those worn by the perpetrator during the commission of the crimes were identified and received as evidence.

Mr. Theodoulou also mentioned that "in the context of investigating the case on March 26, the 25-year-old complainant, while at the Ayia Napa Police Station, saw and recognized the 17-year-old as the person who had attacked her the previous day. The young man was arrested for the offenses of harassing persons, entering foreign property and indecent assault."

The young man was brought before the District Court of Famagusta in Paralimni, which scheduled the case for April 19, while until then he was released on condition.

The Agia Napa Police Station is investigating the case.
