Ayia Napa: AKEL fire against Mayor: "Instead of apologizing, it celebrates"

AKEL Ayia Napa strongly comments on the reaction of the Mayor of Ayia Napa for the reform of the Local Self-Government through his post.

Yesterday's end with the addition of the communities of Avgoros and Achnas to the Municipality of Ayia Napa, does not seem to satisfy AKEL Ayia Napa, according to which the Municipality of Ayia Napa fails to highlight its peculiarities through this formation.

The Mayor of Ayia Napa, instead of apologizing, is celebrating.

Yesterday's conclusion in relation to the mergers of the Municipalities and Communities of the free province of Famagusta, in no way justifies the celebrations of the Mayor of Ayia Napa. For the fact that we as a Municipality did not manage to highlight the peculiarities of Ayia Napa, like some other Municipalities, bears full responsibility and is an event for which we should there is frustration and reflection instead of celebrations.

The Mayor of Ayia Napa is accountable to the citizens for yesterday's result. His promises as a candidate for Mayor in 2020, that is, Ayia Napa will be united with Sotira and Liopetri, as the best scenario under the circumstances, were NEVER fulfilled. Instead of apologizing to the citizens, the Mayor is celebrating. Unfortunately, he was exposed because his words remained words and his promises remained promises without being able to fulfill them. Our non-union with Paralimni is not worth celebrating because in fact the result as approved yesterday is not very different, since we will participate in a larger Municipality with a lower percentage of representation.

Yesterday's end with the addition of the communities of Avgoros and Achnas in the Municipality of Ayia Napa, is the result of actions of MPs mainly from the parties DISY and DIKO, a fact that proves that even his own party failed to convince the people of the promises he made to the world.

The Mayor is accountable for one additional reason. It is a fact that the Ayia Napa Municipal Council was never informed, nor discussed, nor commented on this change. Let the Mayor answer us why, while he knew about the intentions of the DISY and DIKO parties, he did not consider it right to inform the Municipal Council, which had unanimous decisions on the issue, which he himself opposed during the 2020 municipal elections?

Regarding the name of the new Municipality as "Ayia Napa Municipality", it is a fact that the brand name is preserved, but in no case can it be considered an achievement. The name of the new Municipality is an honor we give to the new Municipality of which we should all be proud.
