Sculptures of 25 meters will adorn the marina of Ayia Napa

An appeal to the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis to take the initiative of approving a proposal submitted by the marina of Ayia Napa for placing sculptures on its jetties, was addressed by the Mayor Giannis Karousos.

In a letter to the President of the Republic dated October 11, the Mayor of Ayia Napa refers to an urban planning request regarding the request of the Ayia Napa marina "for the installation of two majestic sculptures 25 meters high on the jetties of the marina". The Mayor states that this is the creation of an emblematic global reference point which is fully in line with the goals and vision of both Ayia Napa Marina, the Municipality but also with the goals and vision of the National Tourism Strategy.

After stating that the proposal belongs to the "award-winning sculptor Kostis Georgiou", the Mayor notes that "the investors of the marina set a goal to create the best marina in the Mediterranean and to turn it into a world reference point. That is why, without any obligation, they propose the installation of these sculptures ", with the benefits being huge in terms of promotion but also in terms of attracting tourists on a year-round basis.

In his letter to the PD, the Mayor of Ayia Napa states that "unfortunately the Monuments Committee gave a negative opinion on this issue, with the result that their licensing is disputed" noting that "the rejection of the proposal of the marina of Ayia Napa will have a negative impact. both in artistic circles, but also in investment circles around the world ".

Mr. Karousos also states that "there were reactions to several world-famous monuments when they were proposed, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Pyramid, EuroDisney and others, but the authorities decided and implemented them with the results known today."

He also notes that the relevant application of the Ayia Napa marina is pending in the Department of Urban Planning and Housing, which "is not obliged to take into account the opinion of the Committee of Monuments since its competence is purely advisory."

In his letter, the Mayor calls on President Anastasiadis to take "an initiative to approve the proposal for the placement of these sculptures", adding that the Municipality has "full confidence that it will resolve" this issue and notes that "the future of a place can not to depend on the personal artistic preferences of any Committee ".

Giannis Karousos attaches in his letter to the President of the Republic a relevant letter sent to the "Director of the Department of Urban Planning and Housing in which we explain the reasons why he must approve the proposal of the marina of Ayia Napa" noting that "we are judged for things which we do and not for what we will not do ".
