The works on the river Liopetri start

According to the Ministry of Interior, the reconstruction works on the river Liopetri will start by next September, which, apart from being a fishing shelter, is also a place of attraction for local and foreign tourists.

It is expected that the construction of the fishing shelter will put an end to the anarchy observed today in the area, the image of the river will be upgraded, while there will be more effective control of users. It should be noted that the renovation has been a constant request of the professional fishermen of the area for many years.

According to his reply letter, dated June 11, 2019, the Minister of Interior Konstantinos Petridis, after a question submitted by DISY Famagusta MP Kyriakos Hatzigiannis regarding when the project is expected to start, all studies and tender documents for this project. The project, entitled "Configuration of the fishing shelter and the river in Liopetri - Phase AD", have been completed and sent to the Control Department of the Ministry of Transport and the Public Procurement Directorate of the General Accounting Office to ensure certified quality and certified documents. Then the Department of Urban Planning and Housing will immediately announce an open tender. According to Mr. Petridis, "the start of the project implementation works is estimated in September 2019 and their completion in the second quarter of 2022". The project is considered one of the largest infrastructure projects in the fisheries sector of Cyprus. It is approved for co-financing by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund 2014-2020 with an estimated budget of 7 million euros. In addition to the works in the fishing shelter, the surrounding area will be shaped, a fact that will contribute to the protection and promotion of the natural environment of the entire area of ​​the river Liopetri.
