July 15, 1974 - 43 years since the coup

Today marks 43 years since the coup of July 15, 1974.

A junta coup, the overthrow of the President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, was the reason for the Turkish invasion just a few days later.

At 8:20, just at the time of the coup, the sirens will sound for another year, in remembrance of that tragic day.

People and the state with events honor the memory of those who fell heroically fighting for the defense of democracy and the homeland, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis will be held this morning at the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen in Nicosia official memorial service for the fallen.

The President of EDEK, Marinos Sizopoulos, will give a commemorative speech. At 11:00, the extraordinary session of the Parliament will begin to condemn the black anniversaries of the Coup and the Turkish invasion.

July 15 is one of the saddest anniversaries in the history of Cypriot Hellenism, parties and organizations emphasize in their announcements.

At the same time, they point out that Cyprus and its people are still experiencing its tragic consequences. They condemn the treacherous coup and pay tribute to those who fell fighting to defend constitutional legitimacy and democratic values.
