A British secret telegram in 1983 called for the pseudo-state not to be recognized

A confidential British document dated November 18, 1983, reveals the Turkish news agency Anatolia, according to which London made efforts to prevent the pseudo-state from being recognized by Muslim countries.

According to the document, the then British Foreign Secretary sent telegrams to its embassies abroad asking them to work so that the "TRNC" would not be recognized. The telegrams were stamped "confidential" and stated: "We have heard from various sources that Following the declaration of independence of the Turkish Cypriots, some countries will recognize the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as an independent country. These include Bangladesh, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Libya and Malaysia. "The British Foreign Secretary also said that the declaration of independence on November 15, 1983" was not accepted by anyone. "other than Turkey" and is in "conflict with the 1960 agreements which secured the establishment of Cyprus as an independent state". He said that in this context they are taking the necessary steps on international platforms. The then British Foreign Secretary also said that they submitted a resolution to the informal session of the UN Security Council calling for the withdrawal of the declaration of independence of the Turkish Cypriots and called on the Member States not to recognize any Cypriot state other than the Republic of Cyprus led by Spyros Kyprianou.
