Handcuffs on 65-year-old for attempted murder in Avgorou

The 65-year-old man, who was arrested in connection with the attempted murder that took place yesterday afternoon in the Province of Famagusta, is expected to be taken to court later today to request further detention.

Police Spokesman Andreas Angelidis said that "during the investigation, evidence and testimony emerged for the purpose of investigation against a 65-year-old man, who was arrested and is in custody."

He added that "this person is expected to be taken to court later today to request his further detention and the attempted murder offense is being investigated against him".

Mr. Angelidis said that "he, interrogated after his arrest, denied any involvement in this case".

He stated that "various items have been received from the scene, which will be sent for scientific examinations and in the context of the investigations, testimonies are taken in order to examine everything and specifically the motive or spring of the criminal action".

A 65-year-old man from Avgorou was arrested last night, who was wanted by the Police in connection with an assassination attempt against his 67-year-old neighbor, while he was in his field. The suspect is expected to be brought before the Famagusta District Court today for a detention order.

According to the Police, shortly before four yesterday afternoon, a message was received at the Famagusta Police Department that a 67-year-old man from Avgorou had been shot while he was in his field, near the Avgorou Technical School.

The 67-year-old called his son, who went to the field, picked him up and transported him to the Famagusta General Hospital in Paralimni.

The doctor on duty found that the 67-year-old had gunshot wounds to the right temple, as well as to the right shoulder and back. According to the doctor, his health condition is considered serious but out of danger.

Men from TAE Famagusta went to the scene, who blocked the tent which was guarded throughout the night. With the first light of day, the Police will start investigations for data collection.

`After investigations and examinations by the Police, testimony was secured against the 65-year-old neighbor of the victim, an arrest warrant was issued and he was wanted.

Around 21.50 yesterday, the 65-year-old was located in Paralimni and was arrested by the Police, as a suspect in the attempted murder of the 67-year-old.

The 65-year-old was taken to the detention facilities of the Famagusta Police Department.
