CAUTION - HARD IMAGES THAT MAY BOTHER
The beheading of a 17-year-old girl in Ahvaz, the capital of Iran's Khuzestan province, by the man who is said to be her husband is causing outrage around the world. Mona Heyderi, 17, fled to Turkey to escape pressure from her husband but was later taken back to Iran by her family and beheaded by her husband.
Iranian media reported that in the incident that took place in Kasaei Square in Ahvaz, the capital of Khuzestan province, the killer, together with the victim's brother, beheaded Heytderi in front of several people in the town square and then walked ostentatiously inside the city spreading anger, rage and disgust. In the pictures that were uploaded on social media, it appears that the man is holding his wife's head in one hand and a knife in the other.
The killer was arrested, according to the Rokna show in Iran. The murderous husband and 17-year-old brother were arrested by the police after the incident. Police found the lifeless body of a brutally murdered child in his home. The following statements were made by the Prosecutor General's Office of Khuzestan regarding the incident: "Today there was a murder in Ahvaz and then the killer presented his murder act on one of the streets of the city, harming the psychological security of the people. With the efforts of the police and the issuance of the necessary court orders, the perpetrators of the murder were located and arrested hours after the incident. "The state court will deal with the accused in this incident decisively and quickly."
International Awareness Campaign
Following the shocking event, women journalists and women's rights activists launched a social media campaign with the hashtag "let's talk". The women demanded that their voices be heard against the targeting of women and honor killings in Iran. Activists also called for an end to the atrocities backed by the headscarf, discrimination against women and its violent sharia policies.
The independent website IranTrue.com also claimed that after the shocking incident, some state media rushed to blame the victim. According to Iran True, media outlets close to the Revolutionary Guards accused the victim's wife of sharing "provocative photos". In Ahvaz last May, a gay man was beheaded by members of his family, according to Rudaw.
