In a written statement, S. Hasikos states that the UN resolution invoked by the Auditor General "cannot overthrow the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus", while calling on Odysseas Michaelides to exercise the powers deriving from the position of Auditor General such as provided by the Constitution and the Laws.
The Minister of Interior in his statement states the following:
"What gives credibility to the positions of an independent official is the persuasiveness and substantiation of his arguments and not merely invoking principles and declarations that are, in any case, fully respected.
The Resolution adopted at the United Nations General Assembly on 21 December 2011 (A / 66/209) on 'promoting the efficiency, accountability, effectiveness and transparency of the public administration by strengthening the supreme audit institutions', provides for guiding principles It is up to the legal order of a Member State to give them special content in order to make their implementation more effective, always within the framework of the constitutional order and its institutional structures.
"The exercise of the powers of independent authorities and officials of the Republic of Cyprus is strictly limited by the Constitution and the Laws, in such a way that their exercise will not be unjustified, except to be exercised effectively for the benefit of legality and the public interest.
"In conclusion, I believe that the aforementioned resolution invoked by the Auditor General can not overthrow the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus", concludes Socrates Hasikos.
