In his statements, the Mayor of Germasogeia, Andreas Gavriilidis, assures that all the necessary measures have been taken for the safety of the public.
Many were in the area in the afternoon, waiting for the overflow of the dam, whose water covers the needs of the whole of Limassol and areas of free Famagusta, from where the water is transported through the southern pipeline.
Besides, according to Mr. Gavriilidis, 42.000 tons of water are transported daily for the enrichment of the Kourris aquifer and the Fasouri area, while some quantities also enrich the Germasogeia aquifer.
The Mayor of Germasogeia said that all the appropriate measures have been taken to prevent any incident from the overflow. Specifically, the entry of vehicles has been prohibited in the parking lot of the river, in the tourist area of Germasogeia, but also in small bridges, where the flow of water may pass at the level of the road.
Finally, Mr. Gavriilidis called on the public to follow the instructions of the Police and the traffic wardens of the Municipality to avoid traffic jams.
The Germasogeia dam, which opened in 1968, is overflowing for the fourth time, with the last being recorded in 2004.
The next dam that is expected to overflow in Limassol is Polemidia, with a capacity of 3,4 million cubic meters, the fullness of which reached about 95%.
