Hundreds of thousands of items on the Cyprus issue are in the forum

More than 160,000 thousand digital items related, among others, to the Cyprus issue are donated by the former President of the Republic, George Vassilios, to the University of Cyprus.

The archive includes all the texts of Mr. Vassilios' negotiations with the then occupation leader Rauf Denktash, under the auspices of the then G.G. Javier Perez de Cuéllar and then his successor Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

The agreement between the former President and the Rector of the University of Cyprus Konstantinos Christofidis for the digitization of the massive archive took place today (13/10) at noon.

Vassilios: "Do not keep the information secret"

The former President of the Republic clarified that the file he donated to the University of Cyprus does not contain confidential information. However, he clarified that among them are items that were never published in the media.

The evidence also includes reactions from the press to important events that took place during his presidency.

Asked whether the disclosure of the data was accepted by the current government, Mr. Vassiliou said that it is "part of the government archive and can now be used".

For his part, and according to KYPE, the Rector of the University spoke of an important principle and expressed the hope that "all the Presidents of the Republic of Cyprus should follow this example, because the file of a President is in the library. It's great value for the organization, but it's also very important for our students and our researchers to have access to all this information. "

Mr. Christofides described the archive as impressive and said that it fully expresses the five-year presidency of George Vassilios. He expressed the certainty that this will be used by the current researcher but also by the researcher of the future.

The library is completed

He also said that in a few months the library of the University of Cyprus "which will be the most imposing, the most emblematic library ever built in the history of the Republic of Cyprus" will be finished and "so this digital archive already has its home".

Mr. Christofides finally referred to the need for modernization of the legal framework regarding the operation of the University.
