Speaking today at a press conference on the occasion of the 19th International Education Fair, the Minister of Education said that at the recent EU Council of Ministers in Brussels, in which he participated, he was invited as a keynote speaker to present the practice applied by the Cyprus in relation to the Educational Priority Zones.
"It is a practice followed in some other European countries, it has been adapted to the Cypriot data and has had excellent results from the first years of its implementation", said the Minister, adding that through this institution a from 17% to 12% ". An exceptional success, said Mr. Demosthenous, who was very positively commented by the European Ministers of Education, who asked for specific information and details on the implementation of the institution in Cyprus.
According to the Minister, the EU's goal is to reduce the percentage of students who drop out of school early to less than 10%. In the EU the average is over 14%. In Cyprus, said Mr. Demosthenous, "we are going with a very good perspective to reduce the percentage below 10% very soon".
The Minister also explained that the issue of early school leaving is linked to unemployment, as research and studies show that 53% of people who leave school early are unemployed.
Answering a question, the Minister referred to three important elements of the practice that led to the reduction of this percentage. As he said, the Ministry identifies, on the basis of specific criteria, the areas that need the most support, through the close monitoring and recording of data in each area.
The second important element is, according to the Minister, the actions and actions through which conditions are created to help these areas, which include kindergartens, elementary schools, high schools and lyceums.
The third element is the support of activities that will give students, parents and teachers the necessary supplies to achieve the desired goals, through psychological, pedagogical and financial support provided by the Services of the Ministry.
