How often babies cry every day was studied by British researchers, led by Professor Dieter Volke of the University of Warwick, focusing on 8.700 babies.
Researchers have found that babies around the world cry for an average of about two hours a day during the first two weeks after birth. But baby to baby is very different: some do not cry for more than half an hour a day, while some cry for more than five hours, according to the Athens News Agency.
Babies generally reach the peak of crying (two hours and 15 minutes) in the sixth week, while by the 12th week of life crying is reduced to one hour and ten minutes a day on average.
The study shows that babies do not cry the same in all countries. Babies in Britain, Canada, Italy and the Netherlands cry the most, while Denmark, Germany and Japan do the least.
The highest levels of colic-crying for more than three hours at least three days a week have babies in Britain (28% of babies in the first two weeks), while the lowest in Denmark (only 5,5% of babies).
