Two Israeli police officers attacked with a knife, Palestinian teenager killed by gunfire

A 16-year-old Palestinian man stabbed two Israeli police officers in the Old City of Jerusalem today before being shot and killed by security forces at the scene of the attack, police said.

Police said they suffered minor injuries, said an Israeli ambulance service spokesman. Palestinian officials did not immediately comment. According to the Israeli police, the 16-year-old perpetrator was a resident of East Jerusalem.

Israel captured the Old City and other parts of East Jerusalem in the 1967 Laxi War and annexed them in a move that is not internationally recognized. The Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their future state.

Israel emphasizes that the whole city is its eternal and indivisible capital. Palestinian knife attacks against Israelis, many of which have been carried out by perpetrators without known links to armed groups, have been sporadic since 2015, a year after the collapse of peace talks.
