A congratulatory letter to the newly elected President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tagiani, was sent today by the leader of the Turkish Cypriots, Mustafa Akinci, stating, among other things, that two of the six seats in the EP belong to the Turkish Cypriots.
According to reports on Turkish websites, Mr. Akinci said that he was working to resolve the Cyprus issue on the basis of a bi-communal, bi-zonal and politically equal solution and that in order for this solution to be viable, its parameters must be under EU law.
He added that two of the six seats in the EP rightfully belong to the Turkish Cypriots and that it is time for the Turkish Cypriots to take their place in the EP so that their own voice can be heard.
In conclusion, he wished Mr. Tagiani good luck in his new task and expressed confidence that he would work for the protection of European authorities and the development of the EU.
