New facts about the crash of the Helios aircraft

The airline has formally requested an investigation into the causes of the crash of the Helios Boeing 737-300 at Grammatiko on August 14, 2005, which resulted in the loss of 121 lives, citing a series of new findings from a special international team investigation. of Canadian Researchers…

According to the Canadian researchers, the causes of the accident are not a series of human errors attributed to the two pilots, but a malfunction of the compression system that did not happen for the first time, neither in this aircraft, nor in other aircraft of the same type of construction, which are equipped with the same compression control and adjustment system of the German Nord-Micro.

They cite in their 41-page report to the Cyprus Commission for the Investigation of Air Accidents, which must forward it to the Greek Commission that carried out the investigation and compiled the conclusion, a series of data: Macroscopic photos of the critical switches, in which, according to the Canadians, it is obvious the compression switch was not in the "Manual" position from the beginning, but in the "Automatic" position and was moved - far beyond the "Manual" position, due to the collision of the aircraft.

Also, the metal base of the compression control switch has been bent in the direction indicated by the switch - that is, well beyond the "Manual" indication, which according to them confirms that the pre-collision position of the switch was in the "automatic". They also cite macroscopic images and analyzes, according to which the two warning lamps (for the "Manual" position) were not lit at the time of the crash, but closed - that is, they confirm that the switch was not in the "Manual" position. . This is because an analysis of the cross section of the incandescent filament of the lamps shows that they were "cut" by the pressures of the collision and did not "burn" while they were on. A number of other facts are also cited, such as the fact that these investigations, especially for the lamps, were not carried out during the investigation, while in the court proceedings it was revealed that these versions were not investigated because the pilots' mistakes were taken as data.

In addition, the events of the decompression of this aircraft in December 2004 are listed, among which, according to the full investigation of the serious incident - and by Nord itself - Micro, it was not possible to determine the causes and explain the problem. And they indicate that this is a repetition of the same behavior.
