Reactions in Germany: Sickness certificates valid for 6 months for Members of Parliament

Reactions have been provoked by the decision of the Federal Parliament not to harmonize its regulations with those that apply to other citizens regarding the validity of the cure certificate from the Covid-19.

Ten days ago, the Robert Koch Institute announced - abruptly, according to Health Minister Carl Lauerbach - that the certificate of those who have been ill and treated will no longer be valid for six months, but only for three. The decision provoked strong dissatisfaction from the state governments with the federation, with the result that Mr. Lauterbach was forced to apologize and pledge that from now on such decisions will be taken after information and consultation. The Bundestag, however, which enforces a strict 2G + rule (access only to vaccinated / diagnosed patients) for participation in Plenary, keeps Members' healing certificates valid for six months. The leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) parliamentary group, Katya Mast, said earlier tonight that the issue would be discussed in the Senate meeting tomorrow and noted that in her view the "special treatment" would cease to apply from Friday. The Liberal Party (FDP) health expert Christian Assenberg-Dugnus also called for an immediate change in the relevant regulation, pointing out that no special regulations can apply in Parliament.

Constitutionalist Christian Hilgruber of the University of Bonn spoke of unjustified unequal treatment of citizens and politicians, stressing: "Whether the reduction in the validity period of the cure certificate is scientifically necessary or not - whether it is a Member of Parliament or not."

Earlier in the day, the Federal Constitutional Court told the Bundestag that it had rejected as "inadmissible" an appeal by the Alternative Parliamentary Group for Germany (AfD) against the 2G + rule in the House. The AfD had called for a temporary suspension of the rule to allow unvaccinated or terminated MEPs to attend the Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony, which will take place tomorrow.
