Dendias-Tsavosoglou: Turkey will vote Greece for the UN Security Council

Nikos Dendias and Mevlut Cavusoglu announced after their meeting in Brussels today that Ankara will vote for Greece's candidacy to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member.

Athens, for its part, will support the Turkish candidacy for the position of secretary general of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the International Conference of Donors for Turkey and Syria. The President of the European Commission, Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen, and the Prime Minister of Sweden, Mr. Ulf Kristerson who holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU for the current semester, are jointly hosting the conference to mobilize support of the international community to deal with the catastrophic consequences of major earthquakes

Nikos Dendias, attending the Council of Foreign Ministers in Brussels, said:

"First, in the Council today we will discuss the issues arising from the continued Russian aggression against Ukraine. President Putin's visit to Mariupol certainly does not help the atmosphere at all. From there, we will have the opportunity to be informed by Josep Borrell about the very important success of the agreement between Belgrade and Pristina. It is something in which Greece has invested a lot. And, finally, I would like to tell you that at 13:00 I will meet with the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu," said Mr. Dendias, arriving.

The most recent meeting between the two foreign ministers of Greece and Turkey took place in February in the wake of the tragic earthquakes that hit the neighboring country, when the Greek minister visited the affected areas accompanied by his Turkish counterpart.
