The Italian coast guard on Thursday rescued about 450 migrants 100 miles from Syracuse, sources said.
A new rescue operation was reportedly launched after about 330 mostly Pakistani migrants were rescued 100 miles off Calabria on Thursday morning.
The new operation was carried out by the coast guard of Catania and involved a fishing boat, located about 100 miles east of Syracuse, with 450 migrants on board.
The vessel was rescued by the Corsi vessel and a Coast Guard patrol vessel.
Three commercial vessels and a Frontex patrol car were also on site.
