Five teenage girls were reportedly arrested in Iran and forced to issue a public apology after they posted a TikTok video of themselves dancing without hijabs on Women's Day on March 8, according to Iran International.
Iranian security forces held them for 48 hours. Iran bans dancing and singing by women in public, especially without a hijab.
In the video the girls danced to the song "Calm Down" by Selena Gomez and Rema. Gomez and Rema expressed their support for the girls on social media.
The clip was shot in the city of Ekbatan in western Tehran and was described as an "act of defiance of the Iranian regime".
According to Iran International, the girls were then forced to make another video repenting for their actions while their heads were covered with headscarves.
After the girls' arrests, other girls and women in Iran posted their own videos of themselves dancing without hijabs to the same song in support of the particular teenagers.
Selena Gomez, who saw the video, shared it on Instagram and wrote: “These girls and all the women in the country who continue to bravely demand meaningful change. Know that your strength inspires us."
