Dismissed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said goodbye to State Department employees, calling Washington a "bad city" without mentioning President Donald Trump at all.
Although yesterday was his last day at the State Department, Tillerson formally retains the post of Secretary of State until March 31, just over a year after taking office.
Trump fired Tillerson via Twitter last week, after months of squabbling over North Korea, Russia and Iran policy. Trump has decided to appoint Tillerson to succeed CIA Director Mike Pompeo. The hearing to approve his appointment is expected to take place on 12 April at the earliest.
"This may be a very ill-intentioned city, but you do not have to choose to engage in this mentality," Tillerson told staff gathered in the State Department lobby, with his comments interrupted by applause.
Since his dismissal, Tillerson has emphatically refused to thank Trump for giving him the opportunity to head US diplomacy. Even today, he made no reference to the American president in his farewell speech.
