The German Economy Minister today welcomed the decision of US President Donald Trump to temporarily exempt European Union countries from higher tariffs on US steel and aluminum imports and called for more international trade cooperation.
"I am very pleased that we have avoided a situation for the German steel and aluminum industry and its workers that could lead to great uncertainty," Economy Minister Peter Altmeier told Deutschlandfunk radio.
"We do not want further unilateral measures, we want prudent agreements instead," he added. "Our goal is that at the end of these talks, the architecture of international trade needs to be more stable - there needs to be more cooperation, not less."
