Prosecutors investigating war crimes cases during the invasion of Ukraine are examining allegations of violent deportation of children to Russia as they seek to indict the genocide, the country's top prosecutor has said.
International humanitarian law classifies the forced mass deportation of people during a conflict as a war crime.
In particular, the "violent transfer of children" is characterized as genocide, the most serious of the war crimes, according to the 1948 Genocide Convention which prohibited the intent to destroy - in whole or in part - a national, ethnic, racial or religious group.
The attorney general, who oversees multiple war crimes investigations in Ukraine, said "we have more than 20 cases of violent human trafficking" in Russia from various parts of the country since the invasion began on February 24.
