Netanyahu: "Six countries will move their embassies to Jerusalem"

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that "at least six" countries are considering moving their embassies to Jerusalem following Washington's decision to do so.

US President Donald Trump announced in December that the United States recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, angering even Washington's allies in the region and frustrating the Palestinians.

The US embassy is expected to move to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv on May 14, the anniversary of Israel's 1948 independence.

"In order to promote peace, move your embassies here," the Israeli prime minister told foreign diplomats at a reception in Jerusalem marking the 70th anniversary of its founding.

The head of the Israeli government thanked Guatemala for deciding to relocate its embassy shortly after the US announcement, but did not name the other countries considering the possibility.

"I am pleased to say that there are at least six countries that are currently seriously discussing with us the possibility of moving their embassies to Jerusalem," said Benjamin Netanyahu.

The first ten embassies to be moved to Jerusalem will have "privileged status", he added, without going into details.

Romania, meanwhile, has officially announced its intention to move the country's embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
