The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet seized more than 20 AK-1.400 rifles and 47 rounds of ammunition from a ship bound for Iran on December 226.600, State Department spokesman Ned Price said yesterday.
The ship was on a route that has long been used for smuggling weapons to the Houthis in Yemen. The smuggling of weapons from Iran to the Houthis represents a blatant violation of the UN arms embargo and is another example of malicious Iranian activity prolonging the war in Yemen, the US official said. Iran's support for armed groups across the region threatens international and regional security, U.S. forces, diplomats and U.S. citizens in the region, as well as U.S. partners in the region and elsewhere, he added.
He said the illegal flow of weapons into Yemen was allowing the Houthis to attack the city of Marib, increasing the suffering of civilians. Further fighting, whether in Marib or elsewhere, will only bring more suffering, he said, adding that the parties involved must reach a political settlement together to end the war.
