Pakistan: Former PM sentenced to 10 years in prison for corruption

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was sentenced today to ten years in prison by an anti-corruption court, according to court sources, which is a serious blow to his party ahead of the July 25 parliamentary elections.

Sharif, who was absent from an Islamabad court hearing, was "sentenced to ten years in prison and fined eight million pounds ($ 10 million)" in a luxury apartment case in London, he said. his lawyer, Mohammad Orangzeb.

According to prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar Abbas, the court ordered the federal government to seize the apartments.

Three of Sharif's four children were also charged in the apartment case, including his daughter, Mariam Sharif, who is considered his political successor. The latter was sentenced today to 7 years in prison.

Sharif and his daughter are currently in London, at the head of Sharif's wife, Kalsum, who is suffering from cancer and is in a coma after suffering a heart attack last month.

In July 2017, the Pakistani Supreme Court prematurely ended the third term of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, following the revelations about the luxury real estate owned by his family through offshore companies.

Pakistani justice subsequently barred Sharif from leading his party, the PML-N, and barred him from running in any elections for life. His family denies any wrongdoing and implies that Nawaz Sharif is a victim of a conspiracy hatched by the powerful Pakistani army.

The PML-N party, now led by his brother Shahbaz Sharif, is one of the main parties running in the July 25th parliamentary elections. His main opponent is the PTI, led by former cricket champion Imran Khan.
