US President Joe Biden on Thursday gave four times what he ordered at a restaurant during a visit to Los Angeles in solidarity with Americans suffering from inflation, three weeks before the midterm elections.
Smiling, the occupant of the White House explained to the employee that the extra money he gave him was enough for the next customer's order.
Initially, the restaurant chain worker wanted to give the president a 50% discount to reward him for "his services" to the nation. For the two quesadillas and six tacos ordered by Mr. Biden and some California elected officials, he thus asked for just $16,45.
Rather than accept the trade gesture, the Democratic president, whose popularity remains low in part because of rising U.S. prices and risks losing his party's slim majority in Congress in November, gave $60.
Generosity shown just a few hours after the release of new data on the trajectory of inflation, which confirmed the loss of purchasing power of Americans.
The consumer price index (CPI) rose 8,2 percent in September on a year-over-year basis, according to figures released earlier by the Labor Department. On a monthly basis, inflation accelerated again (+0,4%) between August and September compared to the increase between July and August (+0,1%).
Mr. Biden announced yesterday Thursday that he will make "next week" decisions on the price of fuel, which remains "very high."
The American president is on a tour of states in the American West, to support Democratic politicians in their campaigns ahead of the midterm elections.
