Poland: The 2 victims of the missile strike will be buried at public expense

Poland is to give a public funeral to the two victims of a rocket explosion in their village near the country's border with Ukraine a few days ago, the local parish priest told the national PAP news agency today.

As he clarified, the two separate funerals will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

A missile hit a farm in the village of Shevodov, about six kilometers from the border with Ukraine, and the blast killed a 60-year-old tractor driver and a 62-year-old warehouse worker.

Local media reported that the tractor driver was carrying corn to the warehouse when the rocket exploded, while the second victim was standing next to him.

The two men are the first civilians in Poland, a NATO member country, to die as a result of Russia's war in Ukraine.

Both Poland and NATO on Wednesday attributed the strike to a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile, while placing substantial blame on Moscow for forcing Kyiv to defend itself against Russian attacks.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is insisting it was a Russian missile, arguing that the crater was too large to have been caused by an anti-aircraft missile.

But he admitted that he doesn't know 100% exactly what happened.

Russia has launched multiple missile strikes against Ukraine this week, twice putting the entire country on airstrike alert and causing widespread power outages.
