Putin: Russia's neighbors should not escalate tensions

Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged Russia's neighbors not to escalate tensions.

"We have no bad intentions for our neighbors. "And I would also advise them not to escalate the situation, not to impose any restrictions," he said.

He added that "we are fulfilling all our obligations and we will continue to fulfill them". In a televised statement, Putin said: "We do not see any need here to worsen or worsen our relationship. "And all our actions, if they arise, always result solely in response to certain unfriendly acts, acts against the Russian Federation," he added.

Pictures of Putin taking part in a flag-raising ceremony on a ship in northern Russia were broadcast online on television from his home outside Moscow.
