Voting in the run-up to the Skopje presidential election

The current electoral process for the presidential elections in Skopje is proceeding smoothly and without any particular problems. The polls opened at 7 local time (8 Greek time), in 3.480 polling stations across the country. The total electorate amounts to 1.808.131 voters.

According to an announcement by the National Electoral Commission, by 10 in the morning (local time) the turnout was 6,26%, quite low compared to other elections in the neighboring country.

We remind you that there are three candidates in this election:

  • Stevo Pentarovski, the country's national coordinator for NATO, is the candidate of Zoran Zaef's Social Democratic Union (SDSM) and Ali Ahmeti DUI, as well as smaller parties in the ruling coalition.
  • Gordana Silianovska, a professor of constitutional law at Skopje University, is the candidate of the main opposition party, VMRO-DPMNE, from which ousted President Giorgi Ivanov comes from.
  • Blerim Reka, a professor at the University of Tetovo, who is supported by the Albanian opposition parties "BESA" and "Alliance for Albanians".

To be elected president from the first round requires more than 50% of all voters in the country, which is considered almost impossible, so, according to all indications, a second round will follow, on May 5, in which The two who get the most votes in the first round will participate.

The polls will close at 19:00 local time (20:00 Greek time). The first results are expected to be announced later in the evening.
