According to spokeswoman Morgan Ortega, the reopening of Varos is incompatible with UN Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789 and is a provocative and counterproductive move that undermines the resumption of talks.
"The United States supports efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and continues to demand dialogue and respect for international law. President Erdogan's recent visit was a step in the wrong direction.
"The United States continues to support a comprehensive settlement for the reunification of the island on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, which will benefit all Cypriots, as well as the wider region."
Brussels also voiced its opposition to Turkey's moves in the Occupied Territories through Josep Borrell, who spoke of actions that would cause more mistrust and tension in the region.
"After seeing the closed area of Varosi, one has to wonder why, as north and as south, these places with all this beauty were kept away from the world," said Tayyip Erdogan from Occupied Cyprus on Sunday, noting that " the issue here will be resolved ".
"A new process has now begun quickly, with the work done in Varosi," Erdogan said, adding that it was clear who the real owners of the area were, "and they are waiting for the day when they will meet."
