Twitter does not rule out closing Trump's account

A high-ranking Twitter executive did not rule out the possibility of closing Donald Trump's account if the US president continues to post incendiary messages that violate the rules of the platform.

The @realDonaldTrump account is one of the 10 most followed on Twitter (81,7 million). However, the American president has come to a rift with the website, since in two of his posts related to the letter vote, the label "verify the facts" was included.

Shortly afterwards, Twitter "covered" a message from Trump on the grounds that he was breaking his rules because he was "praising violence." "When the looting begins, the fire starts," Trump wrote on the occasion of clashes between protesters and police in several US cities after the death of African-American George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The director of Twitter's public policy strategy, Nick Pickles, told a British parliament hearing today that Trump's tweets were being viewed in the same way as the others. "Every time a user's message is posted and you point it out to us, we look at it based on our rules," he told the parliamentary committee responsible for digital media.

Lawmakers have twice asked Pickles if this means the president's account could be closed if he continues to break the rules. "All Twitter accounts are subject to Twitter rules," he replied both times.

Facebook, the world's largest social networking platform, has decided not to label or censor Trump's messages, much to the displeasure of many of its employees who went on strike in protest.
