Two people were killed by an avalanche in the eastern Turkish city of Erzurum, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said today as the country was facing adverse weather conditions.
Turkey has suspended flights to Istanbul airport for almost 24 hours earlier this week due to a heavy snowstorm that covered the city with snow and left thousands stranded.
In a statement, AFAD said the avalanche hit the Khorasan area of the eastern city of Erzurum around 12:00 a.m., adding that emergency teams had been deployed in the area.
"Unfortunately, we have recovered the bodies of two of our citizens trapped under an avalanche in the Khorasan region of Erzurum," AFAD reported.
Eastern Turkey often experiences severe winters with heavy snowfall and severe cold. Erzurum is home to some of the country's most popular ski slopes.
