Trump and Trinto discussed steel and NAFTA

US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trindade stressed the importance of renegotiating the terms of the free trade agreement on Monday during a telephone conversation. (NAFTA), as the seventh round of talks between Washington, Ottawa and Mexico ended without any tangible progress.

Trump and Trinto "both welcomed the progress of negotiations on the North American Free Trade Agreement," said a statement issued by the Canadian prime minister.

"The two leaders also agreed on the importance of these negotiations reaching a satisfactory outcome," the Canadian prime minister's office said in a statement.

In the days following the US president's announcement that he would impose high tariffs on imported steel and imported aluminum within days, Trinto "expressed serious concerns about the tariffs that the US government intends to impose", always in a statement. published in Ottawa.

Trinto "insisted that the tariffs would not facilitate an agreement on NAFTA," the Canadian prime minister's office said in a statement.

Hours earlier, Trump had made it clear that he would consider exempting the tariffs he announced in the event of a new, "fairer" trade deal he said.

Trinto's announcement came after Canada warned that it would "immediately" take "appropriate" action against US interests in the event of tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, addressed by Canadian Foreign Minister Krie.

Trump threatens to impose tariffs of 25% on imported steel and 10% on imported aluminum, without specifying which countries the measure targets.

"If restrictions are placed on Canadian steel and Canadian aluminum, Canada will take appropriate and swift action to protect its commercial interests and those of its employees," said Freeland of Mexico.

"We will continue to defend workers and the aluminum and steel industries," the Canadian foreign minister insisted, without elaborating on what retaliatory measures Ottawa would take in such a case.

Canada ranks first in US steel and aluminum exports.

For its part, the European Union has also warned that it will retaliate immediately by taking retaliatory action against US companies in the raw materials, industry and primary sectors if confronted with US tariffs. The EU will also have recourse to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in such a case.
