Former police officer Derek Chauvin, who was found guilty last year of killing African-American George Floyd in Minneapolis after kneeling on his neck for 9 minutes, was sentenced by a federal court to 20 years and 5 months in prison for violating the victim's civil rights, during during his attempt to arrest him, in May 2020.
Chauvin pleaded guilty to the federal charge last December. He is already serving a 22,5-year sentence for Floyd's murder, a sentence handed down by a state court in Minnesota last year. He will serve both sentences concurrently, local news channel KSTP-TV reported.
With Chauvin's decision to plead guilty, he avoided a retrial. Under his plea deal with federal prosecutors, he admitted for the first time that he was responsible for Floyd's death.
The three other officers involved in the case, when they tried to arrest Floyd on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 bill to buy cigarettes, were found guilty last February of violating the suspect's civil rights. It is currently unclear when their sentence will be pronounced.
