Increased risk for unvaccinated pregnant women from the Delta mutation

The coronavirus delta mutation poses an increased risk of serious disease for unvaccinated pregnant women and unborn children, according to new research from the University of Oxford.

According to the researchers, there has been a worrying increase in the number of unvaccinated pregnant women admitted to the hospital with severe symptoms. COVID-19.

Specifically, in the first wave of the pandemic, 24% of pregnant women hospitalized for coronavirus had moderate or severe symptoms. This percentage increased to 36% with the predominance of the British Alpha mutation and has now risen to 45% with the Indian Delta variant.

A total of 3.371 coronavirus pregnancies have been treated in the United Kingdom since the beginning of the pandemic. About one in ten of these admission cases required intensive treatment, while one in five unvaccinated pregnant women admitted to hospital due to coronavirus gave birth prematurely.

On the other hand, according to the research, no fully vaccinated pregnant woman needs to be admitted to hospital from the beginning of the vaccination program until the beginning of July. 99% of pregnant women with Covid who have been treated have not received any dose of the vaccine.

Leading researcher Professor Marian Knight revealed that only last week they had to be hospitalized due to COVID-19 about 200 pregnant women.

"I can not stress more strongly how important it is for pregnant women to be vaccinated to protect both themselves and their baby," said the Oxford professor.
