Cypriot carob is first in quality, producers need incentives

Nikolas Harpidis is one of the most famous carob producers in the Paphos District, originally from Peyia. Today he is 38 years old and has been working with carob for several years due to his love for the tree which he learned from his grandfather and later from his father.

As he reported to KYPE, they process the carob for food, for serving at home, broken carob for juices, for animal feed and the cold carob.

Mr. Harpidis also said that the Cypriot carob is number one in quality, that's why it is sold more expensive than the others.

He also appealed to the Government to give better incentives in terms of subsidies both for the hectares and for the fruit because they are crops that exist only in the Mediterranean.

In previous years, Cyprus was 3rd in production worldwide, while now it has fallen, he added.

The carob is a living heritage of Cyprus, says the Mayor of Peyia

The Mayor of Peyia, Marinos Lambrou, also mentioned the carob of Peyia, noting that the carob is a small culinary treasure of Peyia and is a point of reference for the entire region.

"The carob tree is one of the characteristic trees of our country," said Mr. Lambrou, adding that "this precious gift of nature is not only a basic food source for Cypriots, but a living heritage linked to every aspect of our lives, our everyday life and our habits", he concluded.

It is noted that in Paphos District, Pegeia, mountainous Paphos such as Tala, Akoursos, Koili, Mesogi, Tremithousa, Kouklia, Peristerona, Akourdaleia and Goudi, as well as other communities, have carob trees.
