The constitutionality of the decrees to stop the pandemic is being challenged in court, on the occasion of the persecution of the priest Akakios for carrying out a service, in the presence of believers.
Yesterday, the priest of the Akaki region appeared before the District Court, with criminal prosecution against him for violating the law on disinfection. The defense attorney of the accused, Nikos Clerides, objected to the priest responding to the accusations and asked the court to give him permission to speak, in order to raise the issue of legality and constitutionality of the issued decrees.
The ombudsman argues that the decrees banning free movement, the right to assemble and the right to religion are unconstitutional, as they effectively abolish human and individual rights provided by the Constitution.
The legal documentation of the ombudsman's defense will be heard in court on April 11, where the position of the Attorney General is expected to be submitted.
