Reactions to the occupied by images of abandonment of the elderly in a nursing home

The images from the nursing home in the occupied Sygkrasi, which belongs to an institution (EVKAF), where about 50 elderly people live, caused shock and reactions in the Turkish community.

The video was posted on a personal social media account of a man, a former TV presenter, who entered the building on Friday night and, with the help of a second man, broadcast live the situation in the building. Moldy walls, fallen ceilings, pipes and walls in damaged bathrooms, old beds, stacked chairs, old objects and unsuitable for use in common areas.

20 positive cases of coronavirus were detected in this particular nursing home, while - as the Turkish Press writes today - the pharmacists' association announced that its members visited the area and checked the medicines, locating dozens of expired boxes. They replaced them with new ones.

Hatice Jenkins, president of the Association for the Rights and Mental Health of the Elderly, wrote in a post that she had been warning since last September and had sent letters everywhere about the situation to the nursing home. "I have been begging you every year for 5 years to fix the ceiling of this nursing home," he said, adding that now politicians are pretending that nothing has happened for so long. "Are they ashamed of what they see?"

Jenkins describes the situation in the building as a human drama, noting that the ceiling has fallen in various places, the toilets are not empty, the smell is unbearable, the elderly and careless people are left in a corner.

It is noted that the image of an old woman tied with a rope to her bed provoked strong reactions.

On Saturday, "Prime Minister" Faiz Suzuoglu visited the site, announcing that he was removing from his duties the members of the board of directors of the bakufik to which the nursing home belongs. By his order, he said, the "bakufi department" met extraordinarily and removed from their positions the members of the board of the said bakufik, to which the nursing home belongs, which will come under the jurisdiction of the "municipality" of Trikomo, from today, Monday , as it is within its limits. From Caesarea, Turkey, where he was on Saturday, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar told the news agency that he was taking the initiative on the situation in the nursing home. Today his wife is expected to go on the spot.

EVKAF announced today that the elderly in this building will be transferred to a nursing home that again belongs to a bakufiko, in Famagusta. The union of engineers proposed to make the necessary repairs to the building on a non-profit basis.

The "Ministry of Health" announced that yesterday all the residents of the nursing home underwent medical examinations and eight of them were transported to the emergency hospital for treatment in occupied Nicosia. He also mentioned that everyone has been fully vaccinated but also with the booster dose.

Many on social media, but also in the Turkish Cypriot press today write that the members of the board of directors of the bakufik to which the nursing home belongs should be held accountable to justice. A typical is the title of Avroupa.
