From presidential pardon… back to prison for 8 years

The Limassol Permanent Criminal Court yesterday sentenced the 8-year-old defendant to 29 years in prison in connection with the case of 8,5 kilos of drugs and a sum of € 17.695, which were found after a coordinated operation by YKAN on May 19.

The accused in a previous court proceeded to an admission in the charge of possession with the aim of supplying it to another person. The 41-year-old father of the 29-year-old is also accused in the case, but he does not admit the accusations.

With the imposition of the sentence of 8 years, it is expected that the previous sentence of 18 months imprisonment for the accused, which was suspended after the Presidential pardon, will be activated. He will serve consecutive sentences of about 10 years.

According to the decision of the Criminal Court, the 29-year-old was sentenced in 2019 to prison for drug trafficking and while he served part of it, he was given a Presidential pardon. The young man, however, 10 months later, committed the crimes for which he is currently accused.

It should be noted that the 29-year-old is expected to become a prosecution witness in this case.

The continuation of the court process was set for February 17, 2022 as his 41-year-old father does not admit any accusation.

According to the facts of the case, YKAN set up a business after information was given that the 29-year-old was collaborating with another person in the trafficking and trafficking of large drugs. YKAN members stopped for control, outside an apartment building in Kato Polemidia, a car driven by the 29-year-old. Earlier he was seen entering the premises and leaving holding a blanket. The 29-year-old entered the vehicle and at the sight of the members of YKAN, came out having the blanket in his possession and fled. During the chase, he threw the blanket containing 783 grams of cannabis on the ground. The members of the Force managed to stop him, while after a few minutes his father arrived on the scene.

The 29-year-old was arrested, while during a search of his vehicle, quantities of cannabis were found and confiscated. A search was then carried out on a prefabricated property used by the 29-year-old and his 41-year-old father, where eight nylon packages containing about 8 kilos and 126 grams of cannabis were found and confiscated, as well as a plastic container containing cannabis weighing 200 grams. A large number of duty-free cigarettes and tobacco were also found at the premises.

The searches continued in a rural house in the province of Limassol where a quantity of cannabis was found as well as the amount of € 15.750.
