D. Christofias: "Mr. President, Here is Rhodes"

Dimitris Christofias sent an open letter to the President of the Republic.

The former, among other things, talks about the situation in which the Cyprus issue is now as well as his "courtship", as he characterizes it with all the anti-federalists.

Below is the written letter:

“Α.Ε. President of the Republic of Cyprus,
Mr. Nikos Anastasiadis

Mister President,

Since I did not have the opportunity to express my views on the handling of the Cyprus problem, I decided to write to you.

I am anxious about the course of developments or the stagnation in the Cyprus problem. Lately, Mustafa Akinci, who is in a much worse position than you, due to the occupation, once again dares to put up with Erdogan and Tsavousoglou in a direct way, publicly defending the federation, but also the identity of the Turkish Cypriots.

I believe that Mr. Akinci is emptying our side when he states bluntly that he accepts the Gunderes framework, which is one and only. He empties our side when he calls on it to also declare acceptance and to mean it and to invite the Secretary-General to send an envoy to explore the possibility of resuming talks on the basis of the Secretary-General.

From our point of view, I see a reluctance, which is expressed in various dichotomies in relation to what the Gunders framework is, in relation to the intentions of Mr. Akinci, which I consider to be honest, as well as in relation to the intentions of Turkey, which I do not think they are honest. My view is that if Turkey, which flirts with the EU, If it really wants to move forward, it will have to add water to its wine, change course and negotiate on the abolition of the right of unilateral intervention and guarantees as we know them, and accept the gradual withdrawal of the Turkish occupation troops.

Turkey needs motivation, in my personal opinion. The incentive is related to hydrocarbons, and their future exploitation. It is clear that if our side does not give this incentive to Turkey, the efforts of the Republic of Cyprus to exploit hydrocarbons will not pay off. Hydrocarbons, which seem to exist in abundance in the Cypriot EEZ, from an incentive for a solution to the Cyprus problem tend to turn into a disincentive due to the sure reaction of Turkey. Even if you think that the Republic of Cyprus can proceed with the exploitation of hydrocarbons in the absence of our Turkish Cypriot compatriots. The most effective incentive for Turkey to maintain a positive attitude towards the settlement of the Cyprus issue is the announcement of the intention of the Republic of Cyprus with the settlement of the Cyprus issue to build a natural gas pipeline through Turkey.

I want to emphasize again that this can only be done by resolving the Cyprus issue. As for the demand of the Turkish Cypriots, including Mr. Akinci, to make the issue of hydrocarbons the subject of discussion regarding their distribution before the solution of the Cyprus problem, I consider it absurd and out of the question. Meanwhile, the issue of "co-exploitation" of hydrocarbons by the two constituent states of the federation is already agreed through the convergences we reached with Mr. Talat.

Mister President,

When Mr. Akinci dares to tell Mr. Tsavousoglu that he is only discussing a federation solution and to respond indirectly but clearly to Mr. Erdogan and Turkey that he will defend the identity of the Turkish Cypriots, and that he is ready to discuss with you and accept the Gunders framework, seeking to reach a strategic agreement, there is no point in you ambushing and giving the impression that you are gnawing at time again.

I want to emphasize to you that if you want a solution of a Biconical Bicommunal Federation, you should stop playing on two or more boards. Those who are watching us in the international arena, the United Nations, the Security Council, the European Union, expect from you a clear speech without spin. I can not explain your flirtation with all the anti-federalists on the Greek Cypriot side (the Fighters' Associations of EOKA, the Archbishop, ELAM, and the various so-called intermediate space which in my opinion are opposed by the paranoid opposition) . If you really want a solution to the Cyprus problem and not a final division, you must say figs, figs and boats, boats and look consistent in what our side has long accepted as a basis for solution or as a solution to the Cyprus problem. What I mean; Solution of a Bi-Zone Bicommunal Federation with political equality, as described in the United Nations resolutions on Cyprus. A rotating presidency as has been agreed for years, with its first recipient being your political mentor, Glafkos Clerides, who took public oaths to vote on the Annan plan, which provides for a Bi-Zonal Bicommunal Federation with a rotating presidency.

The burial of the initiatives of the General Secretary made by you and the late Glafkos Clerides in the past, can not be repeated without our side paying a very serious price. And the most serious price I imply is the final division of both states. Unless it bothers you. After Akinji's statements that he accepts the Gunderes frame, the ball is in our court. Will we respond by scoring a goal in the home of Turkey or will we score an own goal? I am very afraid that if we do not crush Turkey this time, we will pay a very serious price, for which you will be held accountable, Mr President.

The situation in our area is explosive. I believe that the development of relations with Israel must be done sparingly. Unfortunately, you are giving land and water to the killer of the Palestinians, that is, Israel. Your full support for Israel encourages the aggression of the Jewish state, which is constantly launching attacks against a very good friend of ours - our neighbor, Syria.

The various supporters of the policy accuse us who want a solution of the Cyprus problem that we immediately accept a priori, in advance the positions of Turkey. This is manipulative slander and an attempt to silence the opposite view. Our position is very clear. We support a solution of a Bi-zonal Bicommunal Federation, which will end the occupation and the anachronistic guarantees as well as the right of unilateral intervention of any state inside the Cyprus.

It is said by some with anger that the Turkish Cypriots will become partners with the Greek Cypriots in the government of the united Republic of Cyprus. This is unthinkable because it is not now established. It was established after the bankruptcy of an armed struggle against the English colonists, and the signing of the Zurich-London treaties, which our party never accepted and blessed. It is with these agreements that the Turkish Cypriots have since become partners with the Greek Cypriots in the government of the Republic of Cyprus. It is since your faction turned Turkey into a guarantor power with the right of unilateral intervention. As a result of those agreements, we inherited the British Bases of Death. The effort of the forces of the right to remove from the Turkish Cypriot community the status of partner led, as you know very well, to the creation of EOKA B 'and the heinous fascist coup of the junta and EOKA B', which has since aimed at a double union. So when we talk about a solution of a Bisexual Bicommunal Federation with political equality, we are not talking about something that fell from the clouds. It is something that aims to restore the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus and to co-manage its issues with the Turkish Cypriot community.

So when we talk about a solution to the Cyprus problem, we must not talk abstractly about the restoration of human rights, which we have achieved through convergence to defend in practice. For the restoration of the four freedoms and their implementation in practice, which we have achieved and which, unfortunately, your faction and you personally, for reasons of pure expediency, fought. We are talking about consistency in the issues of the rotating presidency, which we with the Christofias-Talat convergences have radically improved, but also of the effective participation in the federal bodies.

Mr President, I urge you to respond to Mr Akinci's invitation - a challenge. Any of your views and corrective actions can be challenged during a new round of talks under the auspices of the Secretary-General. It is known and accepted that the solution of a Bi-zonal Bicommunal Federation will be difficult, it is enough to be functional and sustainable as long as the forces that truly love our entire homeland will support it.

At stake is no one's personal ambitions. It is the survival and happiness of future generations. Here is Rhodes, Mr. President.

Sincerely,

Dimitris Christofias
Former President of the Republic of Cyprus
