Dr. Koliou: "If no measures are taken, August could be the beginning of the 4th wave"

The new increase in cases caused a disturbance with the President of the Republic convening a meeting today with the Scientific Epidemiological Team.

Dr. Maria Koliou spoke on the front page, referring to the new increase in cases and the possibility of a fourth wave.

He initially said that there is an outbreak at the moment in our country, which seems to have started with the reassurance of vaccination by a portion of citizens.

"In Cyprus, due to the vaccination, we felt that the virus had disappeared. "There have been several transmission chains in places where people gather, at weddings and various gatherings, so the measures that should have been taken are probably not being taken," he said.

He then added that the second reason for the rapid growth is the Delta strain.

"If no measures are taken, August could be the beginning of the fourth wave. "This virus is extremely contagious, it will prevail in almost all countries," he stressed.

He also said that if the appropriate measures are not taken, with the main measure being the increase in vaccination coverage, we will have a problem.

"The fact that young people are being treated, I believe, will bring other people to be vaccinated," he said.

At the same time, he stressed that there should be incentives for vaccination.

"Employers should encourage their employees to be vaccinated especially in the hotel industry which has to do with tourism."

"The other people who can play an important role are the personal doctors who can help convince people to get vaccinated," he said.

He clarified that this story will not end if larger groups of the population are not vaccinated.

Closing, referring to the possibility of imposing new measures, she stressed that the measures go hand in hand with the pressure that exists in the health system.

"This is an important indicator that shows us that something is wrong. "If the hospitals start to fill up, then it is a bell for taking drastic measures."
