The need for an increase in the vaccination coverage of Cyprus was expressed by the Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases at the University of Cyprus and member of the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Health for the treatment of coronavirus, Maria Koliou, speaking at Mesimeri kai Kati.
In particular, he noted that "although we achieve an increase in vaccination coverage, we will reach 65%, we must be careful because airports and roadblocks open and there is a risk that people will have the mutations, especially the Indian."
He noted that for the Indian mutation the coverage rate with both doses is 40%, so the vaccination coverage in Cyprus should increase more.
Regarding the opening, he noted that "we have safety valves at airports." However, he expressed some reservations about opening the roadblocks. Specifically, he said that "this with the regulation requiring only a test, which can be a rapid test, does not leave me very quiet. We know that in the occupied and there are several cases of the disease in relation to the population and on the other hand have many foreigners, students and permanent residents from Asia. "The Indian mutation will probably come to us from this path as well, if we are not careful."
Asked if we would have a new wave, he replied that "if there is, there will be due to mutations". Regarding the possibility of a third dose, he noted that "immunity goes for several months after the vaccine. "Vulnerable groups may need a third dose that may not have made them well immune."
