Three people, a Greek Cypriot and two Turkish settlers, were detained today on suspicion of smuggling migrants and food from the occupied territories.
Information from KYPE states that around 7 last night after a coordinated operation of the Base Police, a car was stopped in the area of Agios Nikolaos in Dhekelia, which was driving a Greek Cypriot with two Turkish settlers as passengers.
A search of the car turned up goods in bags, namely 50 kilos of fish and 12 dozen vine birds.
The car was stopped on suspicion of illegally transporting settlers and food to the occupied areas.
The three people were arrested and today they were brought before the Court of Dhekelia Bases which ordered their detention until Wednesday, November 20, 2019.
The three are charged with offenses of illegal transport and trafficking of persons for profit, offenses related to Customs and illegal possession of wild birds.
The Base Police are also examining the possibility that the trafficking of persons and food was carried out on a systematic basis.
The case is being investigated by the Police of the British Dhekelia Bases in collaboration with the Customs Department of the Bases.
