Commissioner Kyriakidou: Health needs global cooperation

Today's global challenges in the field of health require cooperation and coordination across borders, said Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou, calling for the strengthening of global health architecture, during her departure for Berlin, where she participates in the meeting of the Ministers of Health and Development7.

Ms. Kyriakidou will participate in the meeting of the Ministers of Health on May 19 and 20, during which the readiness for future pandemics, the problem of microbial resistance and the risks to health due to climate change will be discussed.

The Commissioner for International Relations, Utah Urpilainen, will also be in Berlin to represent the EU at a meeting of Development Ministers on the implications of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on global food security. Both Commissioners will participate in a joint meeting of the Ministers of Health and Development on global health.

In her statements, Ms. Kyriakidou reminded that the pandemic is not over and that for this "we must continue to build our resilience and strengthen the global health architecture."

"We need to deepen our strategic partnerships with our partner countries and secure sustainable funding to better address global health threats," he added.

The Commissioner reiterated that vaccination remains the best response to the global pandemic, stressing that "current global health challenges require cross-border co-operation and co-ordination and the G7 can play a key role."

"This is why we need to launch a strong new global health strategy to connect the dots around the world to improve health systems so that we are ready to respond to global health threats." , concluded Mrs. Kyriakidou.
