Accountant General: To the Attorney General the issue of pensions to officials

The Accountant General of the Republic, Andreas Antoniadis, has referred to the Attorney General the request of the Auditor General Odysseus Michaelides to terminate the payment of pensions to officials who have been appointed to another position.

On January 15, the Auditor General sent a letter to the Accountant General of the Republic, requesting the payment of pensions to officials, for which he considers that there is a violation of previous relevant legislation.

"The matter arose only yesterday (SS: day before yesterday) following a letter sent to me by the Auditor General of the Republic, in which he opines, following a compliance check he has carried out on multiple pensions, that the payment of pensions should be suspended for specific officials", said Mr. Antoniadis in the context of his interview with KYPE that will be broadcast tomorrow.

Noting that he has studied Mr. Michaelides' letter, Mr. Antoniadis added that "on the other hand, I would like to mention that nothing has happened since the last opinion we had as the General Accounting Office of the Republic from the Legal Service and from the then General Prosecutor, which was in 2017, in which opinion the conclusion was clear that the suspension of pensions, of any category, would be unconstitutional because it would be against the principle of good administration".

That is, he explained, two standards could not be applied with regard to the pension right of either the employee or the official.

Mr. Antoniadis said that he, in turn, is taking "seriously into consideration the letter of the Auditor General of the Republic and I have sent it for legal advice to the person in charge, the legal advisor of the executive power, the Attorney General of the Republic for his advice on the handling of the issue that the Auditor General of the Republic himself has highlighted".
